HER STORY: PROFILES OF THE WOMEN WE LOVE WITH ANGELA LONG

We met Angela years ago while doing local maker shows in the Ottawa area and instantly felt like we had known her for years. Not only are the bags she creates absolutely stunning but she is one of the kindest women we know.

WHAT'S YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH? Celtic inspired bags. Made with 100% wool tartan and Harris Tweed® from Scotland. Classic beauty, timeless style.

WHO WAS ANGELA BEFORE MISNEACH? Before Misneach, I was a lawyer! But I wanted to do something creative instead of focusing on the analytical part of my brain. I also wanted to do something that makes people happy! Involvement with the law is rarely an experience that brings joy. Beautiful bags on the other hand...

WHAT'S YOUR SIGN AND HOW IS IT ACCURATE? I’m an Aquarius and I am the epitome of this sign. Independent, free thinker, non-conformist all describe me to a T. I have a deep sense of justice, which is why I went into law. Many people see Aquarians as aloof, but we’re just deep in our own minds.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Scotland!

WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW? I’m watching Superstore. Late to the party, I know. It’s hilarious!

WHAT'S YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? My days vary so much, depending on what’s on the go. I’m not a morning person, so I am typically up by 8:00am. With a cup of tea in hand, I usually tackle computer work first, like answering e-mails, bookkeeping, social media. Afternoons and evenings are usually spent making bags and packing orders. I also teach part-time at the University of Ottawa, so I also squeeze in my classes. I am constantly trying to cram more into my already packed days!

WHAT'S THE HARDEST PART ABOUT RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? For me, the hardest part of running my own business is having to do everything. It’s hard to wear all the hats at the same time, especially when I don’t have the right skills or knowledge. As I continue to grow, I am looking for ways to work with other people with different areas of expertise to help me. Many hands make light work!

TELL US ABOUT 17 YEAR OLD ANGELA When I was 17 I was a complete idealist. I wanted to change the world. If only my 17 year old self knew what I know now. But I also lacked confidence in myself and what I was capable of, something that has dogged me for many, many years.

TELL US ABOUT 70 YEAR OLD ANGELA When I’m 70 I’ll be retired in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, sipping tea by the ocean with a good book. I dream of waking up to the sound of the waves! I plan to (finally!) rest when I’m 70. I tend to be a bit of a workaholic, so I’ll have earned my retirement.

WHAT WOMAN DO YOU LOOK UP TO IN YOUR LIFE? Choosing one is so incredibly hard. I look up to women who stand up for themselves and their beliefs and women who are bringing about meaningful change for their communities and the world. Women like Senator Kim Pate and Indigenous activist Cindy Blackstock.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BLONDIE PIECE?

I own so many Blondie pieces, it’s hard to pick just one. But if pressed, I’d have to pick the Riverbend Tunic! I love how you can dress it up or down and it goes with absolutely everything. I think I have one in almost every colour!
